Ukulele Websites and Resources

On this page there are assorted ukulele web site links, but it only scratches the surface of the great amount of information available on the world wide web. Hopefully, all links to external sites open in a new window. Ordinarily, each web site has a number of resources including song books and web pages containing songs, frequently with ukulele tab charts.

I'm working (slowly) on pages with links to song sheets (with word processing files, if available) for the Tennessee Valley Ukulele Club and the UkeQuestors in Huntsville, Alabama, as well as events such as Uke On The Mountain, the Alabama Ukulele Festival at Lake Guntersville, etc. The prototype of these pages is All Songs.

Inclusion of a link to a business or website is not an endorsement; failure to include a link to a great site is not a snub. If you've got links to some good sites, please share them with me, doug "at" musicandmore.info.

All song sheets and songbooks available on this website are intended for private, educational, and research purposes only, and not for financial gain in any form. All song copyrights belong to their respective parties; please respect the copyright laws in your country and the rights of others.

Music Theory

William Heney has created A Short Course in Music Theory, and he has given permission to have this course posted here, together with any updates. A dedicated page has been created: Heney's A Short Course in Music Theory. Some supplemental materials (blank staff paper, fret diagrams, staff-tablature paper) have been added.

In recent years, there has been a movement to create and post textbooks for students. Licenced under the Creative Commons umbrella, they are free for use. Many levels of education are available from grade school through university-level courses.  It's challenging to keep up with all the available resources; a search of the world wide web would be your best bet when you're looking for something. But here are few links to get your started:

Chord Charts

Chord Charts for Soprano, Concert and Tenor (GCEA - C-Tuning)

Chord Charts for Baritone (DGBE - G-Tuning)

Thysell's Chord Charts_DGBE & GCEA.pdf (this is the chart that I have in each of my song sheet binders)

Charts for D-Tuning (ADF#B)

These charts will be helpful when interpreting early 20th-century sheet music. Although they have similar names, they are from different sources:

Additional charts, notes and helpful websites

Chord Namer, UkeBuddy – Allows entry of notes on a ukulele neck and the website will tell you the name of the chord.

Ukulele-chords.com is an extensive chord chart library for four ukulele tunings plus several levels of chord charts, a chord finder, and other tools and helpful web pages. It also has an Android app for ukulele chords.

Chord Finder, Ukulele-Chords.com. Enter the notation ("0,0,0,0" format) and the desired tuning and it will give you the name of the chord.

Jon Thysell's Chordious is a free program to create chord charts and images.

"Chordious" isn’t just for ukulele; you can create diagrams for any stringed instrument including guitar, banjo and mandolin in various tunings. By default it produces very nice uke chord charts, but you can adjust the settings to make the chords you want including custom chords (Dominant 7no5 for example). Features include:

The latest Chordious release is: 2.6.3 (10-MAR-2022). There is a Help Page, with links to Video Tutorials and the Chordius Download web page.

These are the chord graphics that I use when I create a song sheet of lyrics and chords (updated July 19, 2022). Here are compressed files of chords for C-Tuning (Reentrant GCEA) (15,862 diagrams) and G-Tuning (Linear DGBE) (15,430 diagrams) plus a document discussing the defaults that I use plus the current list of diagram forms in the compressed files linked above (there are 27 diagram forms each for Ab through G#):

and another document that discusses the types of chords that can be created in Chordius (version. 2.1.00).

Hans Boldts has created an excellent website for ukulele chords including:

Barre Chords

  • Chord Matrix Files - Moveable (Barre) Chords for the Ukulele from Keith Fukumitsu! Excellent graphical explanations of barre chords for both C and G tuned ukuleles.

  • A Barre Chord Reference for Ukuleles

For those interested in using barre chords in their playing, these documents include primary barre chords for C & G tuning (Major, Minor, Minor 7th, & Dominant 7th chords), as well as barre chords in 10 common progressions for both C & G tuned ukuleles. Also includes charts of keys and chords under the Circle of Fifths. Version 1d (July 16, 2020).

  • Compressed files containing Keith's excellent Chord Matrix file and my document on the topic for C and G tuned Ukuleles:

Transpose Keys and Chords

Logue Music Services

ChordTransposer (and Chord Diagrams)

One thing about these two options: dont to include any text in a line of Chords; it will mess up the transposition process.

What's the key and the tempo?

A couple of sources for you but use with caution; these websites can sometimes deliver contradictory or erroneous results. In some cases, it is necessary to transpose a song sheet into several different keys (and use a capo) to determine the key a particular song.

The George Formby Society

George Formby was one of England's most famous and successful musicians & comedians whose career spanned forty years -- from 1921 until his death in 1961. During that period he appeared in 21 hit films, cut over 230 records, made hundreds of stage performances, appeared in two Royal Command Performances and entertained an estimated three million Allied Servicemen and women during World War II throughout Europe and the Middle East. The nine chapters of the Society perform frequent “thrashes;” membership is over 1,200, including the late Beatle George Harrison. Earning over £100,000 a year in 1939, Formby was the highest paid entertainer of his era.

George Formby Treasure Trove Found In A Disused Office Cabinet

By Ian Youngs, Arts & Entertainment Reporter, BBC

The BBC reported on April 10, 2018, that an archive of letters, diaries and photos belonging to film star George Formby and his spouses has been found in an abandoned office in Preston, England. The collection was found in a battered suitcase in a cabinet by an office clearance firm. It includes diaries and passports belonging to his wife Beryl Ingham and fiancee Pat Howson.

George Formby's banjolele sells at auction for £28,500

June 30, 2017

The Gibson UB3 attracted bids from around the world, including the United States and Dubai. According to the auction company, such a banjolele would ordinarily be worth about £400. George Harrison had unsuccessfully attempted to purchase the instrument from the late owner in the early 1990s.

Another of Formby's Gibson banjo ukuleles sold for £72,000 at auction in May, 2008. A third Gibson owned by Formby is known to exist.

Richard Hefner – Clawhammer Ukulele Tutorials – 4 Part Series

The Bum: Stroke down on the first (or second) string, with the thumb coming down and resting on the 4th string on each stroke. Practice this, the Bum, over and over.

The “Dit” in Ditty is a brush down of 2 or 3 strings with the back of the nail, followed by the “ty” which is when the thumb comes down on the 4th string.

Practice this over and over before going on.

Extend this technique so that the first stroke down is on the 1st string, then the 2nd string, then the 3rd sting, then the 2nd string, and finally back to the 1st string.

The next extension of technique is to use the Clawhammer in 4/4 time, where the index finger strikes the 1st string on the 2nd and 4th beats, and, then use this technique while changing chords in a song. This is in part 2.

A Few Music-related Programs

These are not necessarily recommendations, but merely links for further information.
This website and its creator have no financial links with any of these companies.

MIDI to MP3 Program:

Direct MIDI to MP3 Converter (Piston Software, Free) is a fast audio utility that allows you to convert MIDI to MP3, WAV, WMA and OGG formats.

Create sheet music from audio recordings:

AnthemScore Software (US$39 for the desktop app download), https://www.lunaverus.com/

AnthemScore is a program that automatically creates sheet music from audio (MP3, WAV, etc.). It uses a neural network trained on millions of data samples to achieve a relatively high level of accuracy. Currently, no instrument information is extracted, so notes from all instruments get combined into one part. You can generally expect the best results from piano pieces. It will convert to the following formats: AnthemScore Data File (ASDT), PDF, MIDI, & Music XML.

MIDI To Sheet Music:

Notation Software, https://www.notation.com

Notation Composer (US $98.99) & Notation Musician (US $59.99)

Notation Musician and Notation Composer both will convert MIDI (.mid) and Karaoke (.kar) files to sheet music. Most of these files are just fine, and will give you good quality sheet music with a little "tweaking" from either Notation product. For these cases, notation musician is the right product.

However, sometimes in such "found" files there will be specific notes that you want to adjust, or you may want to change or add single notes. Or perhaps you want to compose your own music. For cases such as these, notation composer is the product you would need.

Notation Player 3 (free) runs on Windows, Mac, Linux Ubuntu and Linux openSUSE. The player displays MIDI music (.mid, .kar, or .not ) files as sheet music that you can view on the screen while the notes play.

Because I couldn't afford the "name brand" music notation software back when, I began using Notation Composer and have created several hundred scores of old Christmas hymns and carols for a site that I created in 2002, but that I had to sell in 2014 because of health issues. The new owner has added a lot of advertising, but at least my collection of over 4,300 Christmas hymns and carols will survive me by many years. The site: The Hymns and Carols of Christmas.

Optical Music Recognition (OMR) or Music OCR is the application of optical character recognition to interpret sheet music or printed scores into editable or playable form. Once captured digitally, the music can be saved in commonly used file formats, e.g. MIDI (for playback) and MusicXML (for page layout). There are a dozen or so programs that can be purchased and two open sourceware programs. The latter two are:

Source: Wikipedia, Optical Music Recognition, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Optical_music_recognition

PDFtoMUSIC (US$49) by Myriad is often seen as a Music OCR software, but it does actually no optical character recognition. The program simply reads PDF files which have been created by some scorewriter, locates the musical glyphs which have been written directly as characters of a music notation font. The optical recognition consists of concluding the musical relationship of those glyphs from their relative position in space, i.e. on the logical page of the PDF document, and combine those to a musical score. Only the PRO version (US$199) can export this to a MusicXML file, while the standard version works only for the scorewriters by Myriad (Harmony Assistant (Shareware, US$37) and Melody Assistant (US$85).

PDF To Music.

PDFelement includes built-in OCR and an editor. Free Trial, or purchase the full program for US$89.95.
