UkeQUESTor Members & Guests.

We're a group of amateur ukulele players created out of a class through LearningQuest at the Huntsville-Madison County Public Library in 2018. We've become a Special Interest Group (SIG) and meet to practice and learn Sundays, 2 - 3:30 pm in the 2nd floor conference room at the main library in Huntsville.

After a COVID-19 hiatus, the group is now meeting the 2nd and 4th Sundays in-person, and continung our Zoom Jams on the 1st, 3rd, and 5th Sundays.

Please visit The UkeQuestors Zoom Jam web page.

2022

October 19

The UkeQuestors have been invited to provide up to one-half hour of music on Saturday, Nov. 12 at the Pit Stop in Huntsville. The event is a tutorial and, after lunch, a performance by Jim D'Ville. The song list is available on this webpage: At the Pit Stop on Saturday, Nov. 12.

Play Ukulele By Ear

July 30

We'll be playing from the Christmas Songbook this Sunday, July 31, during Zoom Jam (2-3:30 Central Time). Also, there have been some updates for The Summer Theme Songbook  (3 additions & 6 replacements).

July 21

Theresa has announced a playlist for Sunday's in-person jam at the Huntsville Library. Here's a PDF of those songs:

June 4

We will Zoom Jam tomorrow, Sunday, June 5, from the The Summer Theme Songbook plus the songs from the Ukefest 2021. The "Play It With The Pros" songs are recommended to help get the original tempo and phrasing.

I've just created a new page, Books, Books, Books, that has a few resources for the 'ukulele, Hawaiian music and instruments, instructional material, plus some songbooks. If you enjoy history, you should enjoy many of these resources.

April 30

We will "Zoom" tomorrow, starting with the four songs that we will perform at the 2022 Alabama Uke Fest and continuing with selections from The Love Songs Theme Songbook. I hope to see you all there. The link and password for the Zoom Jam have been posted on our Facebook page.

We've been asked to perform at one of Kirk's workshops on June 25. It's been suggested that we use the five songs from the cancelled Ukefest 2021. We need to get a consensus of who is available and prepared to work on those songs by then. Let's talk about this tomorrow.

Finally, in taking a closer look at the calendar, we see that there are conflicts with both of our in-person gatherings in May. May 8 is Mother's Day and May 22 is John Bean's Ukes in the Springtime. Accordingly, we'll skip May 8th and plan to meet at Monte Sano State Park on May 22nd from 1-4 pm.

April 18

Here's a songlist for our next rehearsal: Song List for April 24, with a link to a "mini-songbook" and to YouTube performances of each song.

April 14

In-person rehearsals will restart for the UkeQUESTors on Sunday, April 24, 2:00-3:30 at the Huntsville Senior Center, 2200 Drake Ave SW, Huntsville. Because of the continuing concerns with coronaviruses, we will meet outside in the Gazebo (at the west end of the property). We will be meeting here on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of the month. Zoom Jams will continue on the 1st, 3rd, and 5th Sundays of each month.

Please read the full details here: Restart of Ukulele Groups.

Because screen display of song sheets is impossible in an outdoor location, we will be working from our songbooks.

Here's the songlist for the UkeQuestors: Song List for April 24, with a link to a "mini-songbook" and to YouTube performances of each song.

Display of songbooks on a personal tablet may be possible depending on the sky conditions. Senior Center WIFI will not be available on Sundays.

Finally we will join with the Senior Center ukulele players to perform at the Alabama Ukefest 2022, Lake Guntersville (May 13-14). Doug and Theresa will lead the joint group. We will be playing four songs. Here's the Songbook and songs (note that "Blue Hawaii" has been updated):

Some updated files for this weekend's Zoom with an emphasis on thanks and Thanksgiving Day. We can also draw from the other "New and Updated" files as well as the UkeQuestors Master Song List (plus the links just below under August 16, 2021).

I hope to see you all on Sunday, 2:00 to 3:30 pm. The same link to Zoom will be used as last week (posted on Facebook).

Sept. 24, 2021

Updates have been made to the UkeFest songs; please go to Ukefest 2021 to get the latest versions of songs.

August 16, 2021

The MasterSong List has been updated with a table of contents that has the page number of each song, helpful in locating songs when displayed by a projector.

And for our vocal warmups:

July 9, 2021

We will meet again in person for the first time in 15 months this Sunday, July 11, in the second floor Events Room of the Huntsville-Madison County Library, 915 Monroe St SW, Huntsville, AL 35801, from 2 pm to 3:30 pm. We will be displaying the song sheets on a wall in the Events Room, but bring your UkeQuestors Master Song List and any printed copies of the Ukefest 2021 songs that you have. You may wish to also bring a music stand, if you have one.

We will not be simulcasting via Zoom; other groups that have attempted to do so from the Huntsville Senior Center have found that it's nearly impossible to control the volume. There are also equipment issues as well as time constraints.

Our playlist will be the Ukefest 2021 song sheets. We want to hear how the group is doing with the top six, and also to briefly review some of the other songs.

We may also play Deep in the Heart of Bama (C F G)_2021-06-23_DA.pdf.

May 23

A couple of items for you this morning.

I've posted two public domain Hawaiian-English dictionaries that may be helpful to you. Links are posted on both The Hawaii Theme web page and the Hawaiian Songs - Version 2.1.6. web page.

For those interested in transposing song sheets from one key to another, I've posted several documents on the Ukulele Websites and Resources web page; under the "Contents" heading, look for the line that has links to "Chord Charts - Transposition Helps - Barre Chords."

May 5 Message to Members

Dear UkeQuestors.

As we all know, Keith has retired from Redstone Arsenal and returned to the family home in Virginia. For several months before his retirement he asked that a member volunteer to become the new leader of the group. On Feb. 13, I emailed my offer to lead the UkeQuestors to Keith. When he accepted, I asked Theresa Miller to act as co-leader of the group; thankfully, she agreed.

The Huntsville-Madison County Library will be reopening to groups on June 7 but will not be opening on Sundays until July while they transition out from COVID restrictions. The Library will not be open on Sunday, July 4, so the first Sunday that we will meet in-person will be Sunday, July 11. We will continue to meet in Room 2Fl (the second floor meeting room). I will be meeting with Darryl Palm, LearningQUEST Operations Manager, to get training on AV equipment, and to determine the ability to continue Zoom sessions for our remote members and friends.

The Fall LearningQUEST Catalog is being prepared and a new description for the UkeQuestors SIG has been prepared by Keith:

"The LearningQUEST UkeQuestors are a special interest group (SIG) that provides an opportunity for ukulele players of all levels to meet in an open, unintimidating and accepting environment to refine and expand their skills, and to “jam” and sing. To wit, JUST HAVE FUN! One goal of the sessions will be for participants to gain confidence in their playing ability so they will be willing to perform in ensemble at events such as the Alabama Uke Fest. For more information, contact Doug Anderson (douganderson1950@yahoo.com) or Theresa Miller (art.tree.hsv@gmail.com). LearningQUEST members can also join the SIG by requesting membership to the UkeQuestor SIG Facebook page. Once a member, the schedule, music resource webpage and Zoom Links will be available."

Beginning this Sunday, we'll go over three songs from the proposed Alabama Uke Fest 2021 play list each week. I'd like to conduct voting the first Sunday in June to select our five songs for Ukefest 2021; those who are not meeting via Zoom can vote by Facebook Messenger or email (doug@musicandmore.info). I'll announce the results as soon as possible and we can begin to hone our performance of those songs each week via Zoom and, beginning July 11, in-person at the Huntsville-Madison County Library.

The songs that we'll go over this Sunday are:

  • A Summer Song

  • The Dock of the Bay

  • Mr. Tambourine Man

The full list is available on the Uke Fest 2021 page at www.musicandmore.info.

I went through the full list yesterday and could play (more or less) all of the songs except one (although only about half the songs are in my range). I'd suggest that members try to find at least 15 minutes each day to play their ukes (notice that I don't use the word "practice" . . . it brings back unpleasant memories of grade school band requirements ;).

Please let me or Theresa know if you have any questions or have any suggestions.

Doug

Song Lists

Here is a PDF listing of all the songs that I've been able to locate since I joined the UkeQuestors in the spring/early summer, 2018. It includes the Master Song List, Ukefest songs, songs from songbooks that we've used, and other songs that have been submitted.

Although updates have been made, this remains a very rough draft; a good deal of work continues to be needed. It will be updated weekly or oftener as I make corrections and additions.

As a convenience to those looking for songs to perform on “Play Music On The Porch Day” (August 29, 2020), I’ve added separate chapters for the Tennessee Valley Uke Club Songbook, v. 2.2.5., Uke On The Mountain Songbook (2018), and Uke On The River Songbook (2019).

The following listings are the songs that we've done during the Zoom Jams. It is an alphabetical listing and it includes keys and format (portrait or landscape or both). It will also be updated weekly or oftener as I make corrections and additions.
