2023

September 23

The Halloween Songbook for 2023 (First Edition) is now available from the link above. The Songbook has 21 songs in single keys (multi-key song sheets will be made available soon). The collection includes both some old favorites and a few new songs. Individual songs from the collection are in the compressed file (link above) and in the Individual Songs section (below).

The Songbook can be printed either single-sided or double-sided. There is no Display edition (if you need one, let me know).

The word processing files are still being compiled and will be posted shortly.

If you haven't been with us for a while, perhaps now would be a good time to dust off your uke and join us, Wednesdays at Center 60 (the Senior Center in Huntsville) or Sundays at the main Library in Huntsville (or both!)

2021

This is a parody written to celebrate the intrusion by a group of trolls into the 2021 Spooky Ukes celebration on Zoom. It was written on Oct. 31 and sent to a few individuals who I thought might be able to improve the lyrics. No suggestions have been received. Perhaps it can serve as inspiration for another song (the heroic King, together with his Princes and Princesses, defending the castle keep against maurading raiders, etc.). Versions in Microsoft Word and OpenOffice are attached for anyone who would like to improve on these lyrics.

Select a tune and let your imaginations run . . . I'm currently starting work on an arrangement for the "Basin Street Blues," and that might have been my tune if I'd found dad's 1933 sheet music earlier. The tune I used was the "St. James Infirmary Blues" (more or less), which was the song that Keith was performing when the trolls arrived.

Boris the Spider and Boris the Spider (C)-TM (John Entwistle, 1966)
"Boris the Spider" was written after Entwistle had been out drinking with the Rolling Stones' bass guitarist, Bill Wyman. They were making up funny names for animals when Entwistle came up with "Boris the Spider". The song was written by Entwistle in six minutes and is considered a horror song. The chorus of "Boris the Spider" was sung in basso profundo by Entwistle, mimicking a popular Spike Milligan character, Throat, from The Goon Show, (which possibly helped give birth to the "death growl"), with a middle eight of "creepy crawly" sung in falsetto. These discordant passages and the black comedy of the theme made the song a stage favourite. Boris the Spider, Wikipedia.

Dry Bones (Dem Bones) (James Weldon Johnson & J. Rosamond Johnson).
"Dem Bones" (also called "Dry Bones" and "Dem Dry Bones") is a spiritual song. The melody was composed by author and songwriter James Weldon Johnson (1871–1938) and his brother, J. Rosamond Johnson.[1] First recorded by The Famous Myers Jubilee Singers in 1928. Both a long and a shortened version of the song are widely known. The lyrics are inspired by Ezekiel 37:1-14, where the prophet Ezekiel visits the "Valley of Dry Bones" and prophesies that they will one day be resurrected at God's command, picturing the realization of the New Jerusalem. The chorus and verses are noted for many variations. Dem Bones (Dry Bones), Wikipedia.

The Music Of The Night (C) & The Music Of The Night (F)  (Andrew Lloyd Webber & Charles Hart, 1986)
A major song from the 1986 musical "The Phantom of the Opera," this song was written by Andrew Lloyd Webber with lyrics by Charles Hart. The song is sung after the Phantom lures Christine Daaι to his lair beneath the Opera House. He seduces Christine with "his music" of the night, his voice putting her into a type of trance. He sings of his unspoken love for her and urges her to forget the world and life she knew before. The Phantom leads Christine around his lair, eventually pulling back a curtain to reveal a mannequin dressed in a wedding gown resembling Christine. When she approaches it, it suddenly moves, causing her to faint. The Phantom then carries Christine to a bed, where he lays her down and goes on to write his music.
Initially made famous by Michael Crawford, the actor who originated the role of the Phantom both in the West End and on Broadway, "The Music of the Night" has appeared on many cast recordings of the musical, sold millions of copies worldwide, and has been translated into many languages.
